Prepare for your appointment
Whether you are a new or veteran horse owner, this guide will help you prepare for your farrier appointment.
protection from the elements and safety
- The workspace should be covered from insects, rain and snow, with a flat dry clean floor.
- Practice settling your horse in this space if he does not use it regularly.
- Have fly spray ready in summer.
- If needed, tie a buddy horse nearby.
- Make safe the workspace by confining dogs and children, and removing any unsafe objects from the vicinity.
- If your horse has known behavior or comfort issues, please let me know in advance and we'll discuss training strategies or other options.
get ready
- Halter and stall your horse prior to my arrival.
- Clean out the hooves and brush or wipe down the legs if they are muddy.
- For glue-on appointments the temperature must exceed 45 degrees. Please heat the space accordingly.
- Payment is due at the time of service unless e-billing has been approved.
- Be prepared to schedule your next appointment at the conclusion of our visit.
- Most horses do well on a 6wk spring-fall schedule, and 8-10 wks in the winter.
during our visit
- If your horse ties or cross-ties well, great. Otherwise please be prepared to hold him during the appointment.
- If you cannot be present, let me know and I can usually arrange to bring a helper.
- Have feed or treats ready if your horse benefits from distraction.
- If needed for his safety or comfort or for mine, please have prescription medication ready or applied. This may include pain management meds like bute or sedation like Dormosedan Gel.
Of course, feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you have with me by phone before I come. I look forward to working with you!!
